Fishing in October & November - Focus on Grayling
October and November are perhaps the best months for grayling fishing in the UK, the fish are well recovered from their springtime spawning exertions and are fit.
Grayling are bottom dwelling fish, they feed mainly on nymphs, shrimps, worms and larvae and other river borne foods. |

ABC FLY PATTERNS
Our friend Bas Walraven in Holland has created a new concept called ABC flies.
A new concept in fly tying, the idea is really simple - just by leaving space under the top of the foam so the fly can collect air bubbles from the surface and therefore provide greater buoyancy and make the fly more attractive.
These flies also act as great bite indicators and work well as a rig where buzzers or nymphs can be hung down from the ABC fly, a really effective way of fishing. |

I decided to try these out on our local Trout and Carp Lakes Dyffryn Springs near Cardiff (www.dyffrynsprings.co.uk) and picked up this nice Carp on a Yellow ABC Parachute.

CARP FLIES
We have been amazed at the number of people who have taken up fly fishing for Carp and other coarse fish. So I thought I would go and see for myself – it was incredibly exciting being able to stalk the Carp and see the reaction to the different flies presented to them.
I put on a Dog Biscuit (these Deer Hair flies float beautifully and look realistic) and first cast picked up this double figure Mirror Carp, which after a ten minutes chase up and down the lake was returned safely back to the lake. You can buy these in a Carp fly set or individually. |
